There are some coffeeshops that seem to have barely changed over the years, and 216 Coffee Shop at Keat Hong is one of them.
The building, the surroundings, and even the toilet feel like a throwback to the good old days. Nothing fancy, nothing particularly modern, just an old-school neighbourhood coffeeshop that has clearly been around for a while.
And tucked inside is a mee hoon kueh stall that people living around the area would probably know about.
I went for the soup version of their hand-torn mee hoon kueh, which costs $4.50 without egg or $5.30 with egg.
What I enjoyed most was the soup. It was light and refreshing, rather than overly rich or heavy, making it a very comforting bowl to have in the morning. The hand-torn mee hoon kueh comes with optional egg, minced meat, mushrooms, spinach and fried anchovies. It's simple, fuss-free food, and sometimes that's exactly what I feel like eating.
One thing I wasn't particularly fond of was the meat, which I found a little too starchy for my liking. Not a dealbreaker, but something that could be improved.
Do note that this is a self-service stall, and PayNow is accepted. They start selling early and tend to sell out early too, usually around 10.30am to 11am, so I wouldn't recommend coming too close to lunchtime.
While you're here, there's also a chee cheong fun stall worth checking out. It's quite well known around the area, and the chee cheong fun comes with a generous amount of ingredients. It's not exactly the cheapest, but I still find it very nice.
There's also a carrot cake stall that's recently appeared at the coffeeshop, although I haven't tried it yet. Something for another visit perhaps.
What I like about 216 Coffee Shop is that it hasn't lost that old neighbourhood character. Even the toilet looks like something from decades ago. Have a look and you'll understand what I mean.
It's not a place I'd come expecting anything elaborate. Just a comforting bowl of mee hoon kueh in a coffeeshop that reminds me of the Singapore I grew up with.
Sometimes, that's enough.
